Frequently Asked Questions
Will I
get better?
Yes! Postnatal
illness can be quite different for each woman. However, the sooner
you get help the sooner you will feel better.
How long
does it take to get better?
Everybody
is individual and the illness can last from one month to a year
depending on what kind of treatment you receive and the severity
of the illness.
What sort
of treatments are used for PNI?
You can have
anti-depressants and/or anti-psychotic drugs to treat PNI. You
may wish to have counselling to talk through how you are feeling.
Progesterone cream can help alleviate the symptoms for some women
as well as the use of homeopathic remedies.
Why Can't
I Cope Everyone Else Does?
YOU ARE ILL!
It is not that you are a bad mum or a failure you have an illness
that takes time sort out.
Will I
learn to love my baby?
YES! Even
if you have rejected your baby during the illness or had mixed
feelings towards her/him as soon as you are receptive to your
baby's needs then the two of you will slowly find you can build
a relationship together. It is never too late if you want to bond
with your baby.
Is it hormones
that cause PNI?
Hormones are
just one trigger. Generally there will be a combination of triggers
which can range from a traumatic birth, major life experiences
prior, during and/or after the pregnancy as well as being susceptible
to depression.
Am I going
Mad or Am I just a bad mum?
The answer
is NO! You have a recognised medical illness that will go away
with the right treatment.
Can I get
Ill Again?
You have
a greater chance of
PNI with your subsequent pregnancies. However, with support and
care from professionals, family and friends you will not necessarily
become as ill as your symptoms will be picked up far more quickly.
